Being such a tight and sociable club, OBUHC has always maintained great relationships with past members. Throughout the last decade, alumni matches have been taking place throughout each year and have always been a tremendous success.
From this initial success, Michael Retallack formed London Brookes Hockey club with the help of other Alumni. The club, founded in 2009, is made up of Old Boys and since its formation has been a great success thanks to the hard work of Michael and his fellow players. The club is made up of a large range of graduates from way back in 2006 to the present day and they welcome keen players every year.
It was in 2014 when OBUHC first set up the annual Alumni event involving a huge array of Old Boys and Girls. Usually held in April/May, Cheney Lane sees 5 teams duke it out for the annual bragging rights followed by a trip down to our favourite Cowley Road! A general Old Boys team and the current OBUHC leavers join LBHC in a triangular round-robin and then Old Girls face off against the current OBUHC Ladies. The event has been immensely popular since it started and is great chance to socialise with other generations of Brookes graduates! The day is held in aid of Helen and Douglas hospice each year – a great cause and another reason the boys and girls to get together each spring.
If there are any recent graduates looking to play enjoyable but competitive hockey, please do get in touch with LBHC. Likewise for girls, there are rumours of a London Brookes Ladies Hockey Club being formed so watch this space for more news and details!
As you can see by this website, and I’m sure you’ll read about in our soon to be released Monthly Newsletter, Brookes hockey is moving onwards and upwards – however our biggest limitations are the resources available to us.
Having discovered that other University Clubs are very involved with their Alumni and that much of their financial support comes from past members, we are looking to do the same.
Our idea is to give you the opportunity to give something back to The Club, so that it can continue to grow and develop in the right direction.
It is completely voluntary, and the options available are a monthly payment, or a one off donation.
When looking at previous experiences this year, such as having no umpires for friendly matches, lacking enough goal keeping kit for the Club and having to travel in cars to pre season fixtures as buses won’t be funded by the University. These are just a few areas of concern which could so easily be resurrected if we had the sufficient funding.
Further to this, having two sides in the South Premier League A, we will also be looking to get one off external specialist coaches- such as a goal keeper coach for example, to further the development of our current players.
It’s simple- be as generous as you so wish, pay as much as you think is necessary or manageable for you. £2 a Month in most places, will just about get you a sandwich, or 1/3 of a pint, or maybe 24hr access to a Boris Bike.
How about, you spend £2 a month on the Hockey Club? From that £2, you will get a bigger and better Alumni Day, with lower costs and more treats. You will also get our Monthly Newsletter to keep you up to date with the Club and it’s recent results, developments, socials and fixtures. Further to this, you will be feeling great as you will be saving £2 a month from useless spending, and will be supporting a Club which you were so involved with not too many years ago- and trust me, the £2 pounds a month will go a very long way in OBUHC- allowing us to further increase the stronghold we have on Sport at the University.
It’s an easy process if you are keen and generous, follow the links on the right hand side of this page, and PayPal will direct you to where you need to go!
We thank you very much in advance for this new initiative that will change the way our Club operates and develops, allowing for greater achievements and success for years to come.
